This one makes me choke up a little bit every time I hear it. One of Crazy Horse’s Danny Whitten’s most famous compositions I Don’t Want To Talk About It – a labored, heartfelt ballad that can pull at every heart string, all at the same time.
It was at this time of writing this song that Whitten’s life became to be severeley affected by his heavy drug use and I feel as if you can hear some of that desperation and destruction threaded throughout this song.
On Whitten’s last night Neil Young recalled, “We were rehearsing with him and he just couldn’t cut it. He couldn’t remember anything. He was too out of it. Too far gone. I had to tell him to go back to L.A. ‘It’s not happening, man. You’re not together enough.’ He just said, ‘I’ve got nowhere else to go, man. How am I gonna tell my friends?’ And he split. That night the coroner called me and told me he’d died. That blew my mind. Fucking blew my mind. I loved Danny. I felt responsible. And from there, I had to go right out on this huge tour of huge arenas. I was very nervous and … insecure.”
Best played twice over. Not for the faint hearted. Enjoy x
