I used to have a calendar of The Doors, Live in Concert, handed down to me from my big sister when I was a younger lass. I ripped out various images I loved and stuck them to every bare surface in my bedroom. My mum was slightly unimpressed. She asked me why I would put up pictures of some guys “high as kites” up on my walls. This didn’t resonate so well with me as I knew Mum was a solid Doors fan… she was just trying to be a good muma-bear, I guess. Deep down I knew she thought it was pretty sweet that her daughter was into The Doors too. Like mother, like daughter.
Today’s tune, Spanish Caravan by The Doors, is dedicated to founding member of The Doors, Ray Manzarek, who passed away today agedĀ 74.
This quote from John Densmore best sums up Ray’s musical importance to one of the best rock n’ roll bands: “There was no keyboard player on the planet more appropriate to support Jim Morrison’s words. Ray, I felt totally in sync with you musically. It was like we were of one mind, holding down the foundation for Robby and Jim to float on top of. I will miss my musical brother.”
Spanish Caravan by The Doors, live at the Hollywood Bowl, 1968. Enjoy! R.I.P Ray xx
