Song For Jeffery, among other Jeffery-titled songs by Jethro Tull, was originally written by Ian Anderson for his friend Jeffery Hammond as a way to entice him into the band.
Anderson portrayed his friend in a slightly condescending way as someone with emotional problems who lost his way easily, as described in the first line of the song: “Gonna lose my way tomorrow, Gonna give away my car.” His eventual appearance as a band member in Jethro Tull was, therefore, something of a surprise to everyone!
Burning his trademark suit in December 1975 on his departure from the band, Jeffery Hammond returned to his first love of painting and put down his bass guitar, never to play again.
So here it is, Song for Jeffery by Jethro Tull, 1969, on French TV. Enjoy!
