Because it is Mick Jagger’s birthday this Friday, he is turning 70-years-old (would you believe), I thought I had better dedicate this week’s Tuesday’s Tune to The Rolling Stones.
I love the play off they have with each other in this song ‘Little Red Rooster.’ With Mick’s low-chorded vocals, Brian Jones on slide guitar, and that lazy, labored tempo – it’s a real blues standard.
First written by blues arranger and songwriter Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf then recorded ‘The Red Rooster’ in 1961, while this live performance (below) is of The Rolling Stones in from 1964. It remains to this day the only time a blues song has ever topped the British pop charts.
