Described as “the best politically motivated band in rock and roll” it leaves no doubt in my mind that Gang Of Four, the highly influencial post-punk band from Leeds, had named themselves after the infamous Chinese Communist Party officials of the same name.

With an anthology charged with those speak-because-no-one-else-is-speaking lyrics and live performances fueled by anarchy, the band delivers their high stamina sound alongside a major focus on bass lines and, as critic Paul Morley put it, compositions “studded with awkward holes and sharp corners.”

Their debut single Damaged Goods, released in 1978 is one of my favourites. Enjoy!
