The Periodic Journal

What started out as a passing comment over dinner, soon escalated into a major distraction. The communal dream of creating a localised and seasonal journal began to outweigh the usual conversations between Natasha, Greta and myself, which quickly turned into formal(-ish) meetings. Bringing together our strengths and experience, we started to plan a way in which we could celebrate and give focus to all the local happenings we were excited about.

Auckland, a city globally renowned for its sailing and volcanoes, has also recently acquired a mass influx of boutique, family-owned, and self-sufficient businesses. After many years of comparing ourselves to other major cities and pointing out what we didn’t have, we have finally let our wonderful kiwi ingenuity kick in and we’re starting to initiate ventures for ourselves and for our community, realising all of the good things that we do have. It feels like a very exciting time for the city in which we live and we’re proud to be supporting the people behind this movement.

This debut issue of The Periodic is produced, art directed and conceptualised by designer Natasha Mead, photographer Greta van der Star, and myself. We hope that when you find yourself a copy, you to use it (dog-eared pages and olive oil stains are invited), read it numerous times over, and share it around with your local pals. It is something we are very honoured to produce, especially for all of the inspirational people profiled inside this issue.
