There are some films that can be watched again and again, that continue to enthral, and which contain potent imagery that simulates the senses. For me, Badlands (1973) written and directed by Terrence Malick, definitely falls into this category.
Set in the late fifties, and starring a fresh faced Sissy Spacek as teenager Holly, all soft red hair, freckled face and innocent almond shaped eyes. Alongside her stars a James Dean-esque Martin Sheen as Kit, the charming sociopath whom Holly follows from her home in South Dakota after he guns down her family. They travel across the Mid-West on their morbid adventure, while Kit racks up a substantial body count as his blood lust grows.
The captivating summertime settings of big blue skies, a tree-hut hideaway and wide open fields, combined with lots of denim and cute 50’s dresses, all mixed in with some romance and a crime spree, makes for some seriously compelling viewing.
