Rodarte ‘Breathless’ Release at Dover Street Market

The limited edition tee shirts from Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte for the 50th anniversary release of Breathless, Jean-Luc Godard’s landmark New Wave film starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, will be available at Dover Street Market from June 23rd. One is based on the iconic New York Herald Tribune shirt worn in the film by Seberg, which will be made under exclusive license from the International Herald Tribune in Paris. The other shirt will be an original design inspired by the film. Kate and Laura Mulleavy have been working with Patrick Li to create a new iconic poster for the international 50th anniversary release.

“Godard reformulated the visual language through which stories are told. He is a renegade. In Breathless, he broke all of the rules and formulas within the lexicon of film. His use of wordplay, his interest in time, and his ability to translate stream of consciousness writing to images was ground breaking,” said Laura. “We have been influenced by Godard’s rejection of the status quo and have approached our work with the same desire to create outside preexisting boundaries,” added Kate.

Rialto’s Bruce Goldstein says, “We know that Breathless has inspired generations of filmmakers – but its cool style also fired the imaginations of many other kinds of creative people like the Mulleavy’s. Their association with the film will help us introduce it to a whole new young audience.”

Breathless: 50th Anniversary is in cinemas on 25 June and on DVD/blu-ray 13th September!!
