Richie Culver Interview

Following on with another great interview, Hillbilly Magazine talk to English-born multi media artist, Richie Culver.

Hillbilly : Where did your initial interest in art come from? Was it something external or was it an internal thing that just naturally came to the forefront?

Richie Culver : I’ve never really been interested in art as such. I mean I could name you a few of the Masters etc. but to be honest I’m not from a background where art is important. I’m from a working class small Town in the North of England. It wasn’t till I moved to London or New York that I realized what options I had. It was a really natural progression and before I knew it I’d made a small body of work shortly after getting clean and sober. One of these pieces was seen by someone who is highly regarded and respected in the British art scene and helped start the careers of some great talents in England. Then shortly after that a piece of mine was chosen for a group show in the Tate Modern. That’s kinda how it all started.

Hillbilly : You work in so many different mediums. Is there any specific one that is preferable to you? As well do you view your work as seperate entities or something that represents itself as a whole?

Richie Culver : I do like to chop & change from collage to photography, installation, paintings. I get bored kinda easily , but I also have so many ideas. I guess not going to art school may have something to do with the way I switch from one to the other. I have no fear really. If I think its gonna work I just do it. I’m aware where my strengths are but I believe the best is yet to come for me.
