I remember when I was younger and a total vintage-shopping fiend (ok, so nothing changed too much) we used to always be on the look out for great classic Oroton wallets, you know the nice, rectangular lady-of-high-status purse types with the pretty lining? Amongst other things of course, but it just goes to show the success of which Oroton has had on it’s loyal audience throughout the years.
Oroton remains one of the most talked about brands in Australian fashion today. Founded in Sydney in 1938, pioneering businessman Boyd Lane was at the forefront of his field importing quality textiles from Europe when he stumbled across a ladies handbag frame crafted from a sample mesh material that would eventually play a pivotal role in the future rise of his company.
A logo was designed and shortly thereafter the first-ever Oroton mesh product emerged in the form of a gold powder compact. Best-selling clutch purses followed, along with popular brush, comb and mirror sets, ensuring Oroton soon became the “must-have” accessory of choice across the nation with mesh as its signature trademark.
With demand for the product reaching its peak in the early 70s, retail outlets followed with the first-ever Oroton Showcase opening its doors in March 1973. In addition to mesh accessories, enamel and crystal evening bags and cosmetic compacts, money purses and brush sets were also available as boutiques began opening across Australia and New Zealand and stockists extended to American shores by the late 1980s.
Now, Oroton launch their Spring 2010 Collection of bags, clutches and purses……
