“I was living in New York, feeling the most uninspired I’d ever been. What was inspiring was all of my friends back home who were making all this cool shit and just toiling away. I really think the focus needs to be on what is going on around us, and change this mind frame that a lot of young people in Auckland have at the moment, that you have to be elsewhere to have access to that ‘cool’.”
A big congrats to Sophie Wolanski and Carter Were on your beautiful new store Muck, Floral and General Store – The prettiest new space in Auckland (it’s a Terra cotta dream!) and home to some of the most inspiring local makers. Packed with wild flowers, locally made ceramics (Ophelia Mikkelson, Houston Design Co.) and textiles (Marta Buda), Were Bros organic sprouted bread, and freshly pressed olive oil, the store offers wild and luscious flower and foliage arrangements that can include shapely branches with fruit.
“Flowers are expensive here. But I found a lady in Tauranga who has the most amazing farm. I turned up and she had her grey bob clipped up in a top knot, bright pink lippie, and was running around in her gumboots, and I thought, yep, I’m gonna like working with you.”
The girls are just about ready to serve toast too! Freshly baked sourdoughs and organic sprouted bread, hand-made by Carter, will be served topped with delicious local ingredients to fill your bellies… And by the looks of the menu, it’s going to be busy.
– Muck, Floral and General Store, 480 Richmond Rd, Grey Lynn. Open Thursday to Sunday. For any floral requests outside of these hours, email Sophie flowers@muck.co.nz
