Monday’s Muse: Isamu Noguchi
Monday’s Muse is prominent Japanese-American artist and landscape architect, Isamu Noguchi. Son of a poet and a writer, Noguchi is best known for his sculpture and public works of various mixed-media constructions. My favourite works are those of which he designed as stage sets for contemporary dance performances with Martha Graham Company.
In the late 40’s, Noguchi began a collaboration with the Herman Miller company where he joined designers George Nelson, Paul László and Charles Eames to produce a catalog containing what is often considered to be the most influential body of modern furniture ever produced. This includes his iconic Noguchi table, and his mass-produced lamps and furniture pieces, some of which are still manufactured and sold today.
A beautiful blend of wabi-sabi, minimalism, craft and poetry, make Isamu Noguchi’s works something to celebrate. Seen below at work in his indoor/outdoor studio, gives you a bit of insight as to what kind of artist this guy was ….
