A preview of Matthew Barney’s latest New York solo show at the Gladstone Gallery. DJED continues the multi part and multi site Ancient Evenings. Based on the Norman Mailer novel of the same name, Barney’s project explores stages of reincarnation through the lens of industrial America. In the gallery’s 21st street space, he conceived three large scale sculptures using traditional materials such as iron and bronze. In both form and idea, these works reference the 1967 Chrysler Crown Imperial from Barney’s iconic Cremaster 3 project. Small scale and exquisite illustrations on paper are placed on the walls and serve as a map of the story told through sculpture. DJED is open through to the 22nd of October at Gladstone Gallery 21st Street, New York.
