Paris fashion week keeps getting better and better! Martin Margiela showed his Womenswear Spring/Summer 09 collection yesterday and in his Twentieth Anniversary year he sure threw a party. Held in a deserted stadium-esque space and covered in black cotton, the show space became a huge, spooky theatre as the fabric came together at the entrance to the catwalk, pulling back wide enough for one model at a time to make her entrance. Keeping in theme with his previous bandage-covered-face signature styling, the models faces were either covered in nude cloth or they wore long red haired wigs in front of their faces.
Each look signified a collection from the last two decades of Margiela’s creations – the first was a signature cotton blouse, the second was a negative photograph of Margiela’s first ever jacket (spring/summer 1989), printed on a silk satin T-shirt dress, which the model held up off her body to show off. The third was a reproduction of the first jacket in white cotton, the fourth a plaster cast moulding of it – and on it went.
A huge finale to finish off the show with the entire Margiela team coming onstage after the models wearing his signature medical coats – and then an entire brass band appeared too, just as the ceiling erupted and opened with huge discs of silver confetti! With the internet spinning rumours that Margeila is getting ready to retire it is said that Rick Owens will be stepping into his shoes to take over?? And with that ending to his show, well only time will tell??
