Giving up the pulse and pace of East London, landscape designer Jared Lockhart and lecturer (FRA London) Lisa Davis have recently moved to Auckland, New Zealand, where they have launched their newest venture together, Garden Objects. An online portal for garden enthusiasts, Garden Objects offers a range of locally-made and sourced products as well as a selection of internationally renowned favourites that are sure to tempt the green thumb in everyone.

The Garden Objects curation is impeccable, right down to the very minor details, everything is considered. It feels modern and practical, yet retains that certain romance of gardening. Their personal favourites are that of Gidon Bing’s various ceramic pots and bird houses with a crackle glaze. They’ve nicknamed him the “science-artist”, admiring his way of working and his infatuation with materials and process. Other stand out pieces are their hand-made copper watering cans, Martino Gampa stools, and the soon-to-arrive bespoke Bill Blair rakes. These rakes prompt Jared to stand up from out of his chair, he’s genuinely excited about their longevity and the beauty in their functionality, while Lisa comments on her love for their simplicity in design. These two are a good combination.

Armed with views of Waitemata Harbour, their Kohimarama home was built in 1929. As the first house to be built on their street, it has beautifully maintained a few of its original details, such as the picture box window frames. As we take in the view, I’m left wondering how long it will take before Garden Objects will outgrow their Kohimarama-base. Lisa shares their dream of one day opening a space in which Garden Objects can be on display, and people can be invited to learn gardening skills in store through a series of community-based workshops and talks. I’m excited.

Equipped with international specialist experience, it is so inspiring to see a young couple who are not only driven by the idea of enhancing their own lives, but also by the desire to share their knowledge and skill set with their local community.
