Georgia Jay AW16

A sneak peak at the new AW16 collection by Georgia Jay, photographed by Greta van der Star in the Rangipo Desert…

The desert has for years attracted the kind of souls that are unsatisfied with nine-to-fives, government policies and second-hand language. Amongst their preferred environment, that has nothing to offer but space and time, they find something else, some kind of clarity, and by seeing their world through refreshed eyes (or is it a refreshed mind?) they’re energised, charged with the idea of an open end — a possibility.

In search of that same possibility, local maker Georgia Jay, together with her exceptional team, drove South out of the city until they met wild tussock and dried river beds. Taking the lesser-driven roads through the Rangipo Desert in the North Island of New Zealand, the girls purposefully overlooked road sign warnings of military training — a risk they knew would come with its reward, and photographed their new autumn winter 2016 collection of bags amongst moody skies and red gritty dirt.

Sand, moss and caramel suedes and furs blend into the desert environment, accented by terracotta, chocolate brown and sturdy gold hardware. With an on-going focus to use natural materials and fine hand finishings, Georgia Jay visually unites her new collection with a surrounding that beautifully echoes her brand: perfectly minimal, can stand the test of time, and made for endless possibilities.
